Cougar Band Camp - High School Electives
Students will participate in one or two electives for the week, depending on availability/class size.
All Students in the High School Track will receive daily instrumental sectionals, full brass or full woodwind choir rehearsals, and full rehearsals. In addition, students may choose one of of the following electives:
Introduction to Classical Music
Students enrolled in Introduction to Classical Music will learn about different periods of music history, including important composers, compositions, and musical genres. Students will also review musical scores, listen to recordings and/or watch performances on video.
Jazz Ensemble (placement based on camp audition results)
Students enrolled in Jazz Ensemble will learn about different styles and performance techniques of jazz music as well as perform during camp week. This ensemble will be comprised of Saxophones, Trombones, Trumpets, and a Rhythm Section and is taught by UH Jazz Faculty. This class has a size limit and placement is also based upon final scoring of camp audition. When auditions are complete, the students who selected this elective and scored the highest on their auditions will then be placed into this ensemble. Previous experience is recommended but not required.
Leadership & Conducting
Students enrolled in Leadership & Conducting will be taught meaningful and valuable leadership principles and conducting techniques. This elective is recommended for students interested in student leadership and drum major positions at their schools.
Percussion Ensemble (percussionists only)
Students enrolled in Percussion Ensemble will learn the proper techniques and fundamentals of being in a concert percussion ensemble, as well as perform a work at the camp recital on Wednesday evening and/or on the Thursday afternoon finale concert. All percussionists are welcome.
Writing Music on the Computer
Students will learn how to use modern notation software to compose and arrange pieces of music on the computer. This class has a size limit due to the number of workstations available in the computer lab.
