Sean Phelan

 
 

SEAN PHELAN joins the University of Houston in 2022 as the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands and Spirit Groups. A native of Waukesha, WI, he holds a master's degree in conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as well as a bachelor's in music education and mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Most recently, Sean was the Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director of Bands at the University of Minnesota Duluth, overseeing marching, pep, and concert bands and teaching courses in arranging and music education. Prior to that, he taught at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, TX, where he led the Hawk Band to appearances in the finals of the Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional Championship and in the Texas UIL State Marching Contest. Sean has also served as Director of Orchestras and Associate Director of Bands at Oconomowoc High School in Wisconsin. While in Oconomowoc, Sean was also principal bassist and then Music Director of the Lake Country Orchestra.

Sean is also the Staff Coordinator and Brass Caption Manager for the Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps, the latter of which role he has held since the 2019 summer season. In Sean's tenure, the corps has achieved organizational-record results in the Drum Corps International summer tour. He previously served as a brass instructor and later Brass Caption Head for the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps, where his DCI experience had originally begun.
